Make the most of space in your bedroom with our top five tips
Question: I need some extra storage in my bedroom, but only have space for a few key pieces of furniture. How can I make the best use of my small space?
Solution:
1) When choosing furniture for a small space, the key is to go for pieces that are versatile enough to be multi-functional. A chest of drawers can double up as a sideboard or a dressing table, giving you plenty of space to store the things you need easily to hand. If you opt for mirrored drawers, this will also help to open out the room giving the effect of more light and depth.
2) Tailor your bedroom furniture to the needs of your personal space. No two bedrooms are alike and many have quirks and awkward corners making it difficult to squeeze in conventional freestanding items. A smart alternative is to go for modular furniture that can be made up in accordance with your needs. Built in wardrobes are a good bet as they allow you to maximise the space from floor to ceiling.
3) In a small bedroom it is vital to make the most of every inch of spare space, even under the bed. You could either purchase a divan bed like this stylish faux leather number with four built in draws or if you have a bed already with space to spare underneath, go for some cheap and cheerful storage boxes, perfect for shoes, blankets and linen.
4) Have a good clear out and store away items that you don’t need all year round. It’s not necessary to clutter up your wardrobe in the summer with winter coats and jumpers, and equally the jeans you’ve been meaning to fit back into for years! If you have a loft, pack the things you don’t need right now away in well sealed bags or boxes. If you don’t have loft space, get hold of some vacuum storage bags. They reduce the volume of clothing by up to 80% making items a lot easier to tuck away at the top of the wardrobe or airing cupboard.
5) Storage can also be stylish, and with little room to spare it’s important to make all of your bedroom features count. A trunk can make a strong fashion statement, store plenty of items, and with a few decorative cushions, can also double up as a window seat or a handy surface to place your clothes on at night.
